Recycle for the Children

During football season, revenue from all recyclables collected at games goes to benefit Duke Children’s Hospital.  Kids are encouraged to collect stadium drink cups for prizes. Volunteers from campus and local organizations encourage tailgaters to recycle before games and help clean up after games.

Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC)

The Environmental Management Advisory Committee is a clearinghouse for environmental projects happening on campus, and coordinates environmental projects of their own.  The committee is comprised of individuals representing students, academia, campus administrative services and the Health System. The group also recognizes students and employees throughout Duke every year with awards honoring a commitment to sustainability.

Earth month

Numerous events are scheduled throughout the month of April to educate participants in environmental stewardship.  Some of the activities include “garbologies,” alternative-fueled vehicle displays, compost giveaways, e-waste recycling day and an Arbor Day and From the Ground Up project.

K-Ville campout

Duke Recycles provides recycling bins outside Cameron Indoor Stadium for die-hard fans living in tents to get basketball tickets for Duke basketball games.

Duke G.R.O.W.S.

Duke G.R.O.W.S. is an event co-hosted by Duke Recycles and the Grounds department to beautify an area of campus with the help of students.

Move In

When students return to their dorms during the fall, Duke Recycles collects vast quantities of cardboard boxes from across campus. During the two weeks of student move-in, Duke Recycles, with the help of Grounds and Sanitation collects and processes many tens of tons of cardboard.

Move-out for Charity

For two weeks in May, Duke Recycles accepts donations of clothes, shoes, furniture, appliances and many other vital resources from students and the items are donated to local charities
