Energy, Water, and Natural Resources are tangible, necessary assets that the Duke community relies on every day to execute its mission.  The Facilities Management Department demonstrates leadership and engagement with the Duke community, and with peer institutions, through responsible and sustainable management of those assets.

As a 2007 signatory of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, Duke developed a Climate Action Plan to outline specific goals for the University's pursuit of climate issues related to energy, transportation, carbon offsets, and education and community outreach.  Because Duke's carbon footprint largely comes from the built environment, the Facilities Management Department has actively pursued and succeeded in the majority of overall carbon footprint reductions to date.

Led by Energy Manager Casey Collins, the Energy Management team consists of building systems engineers, automation engineers, analysts, and technicians.  These dedicated professionals continuously research and implement supply- and demand-side energy, water, and operational efficiency improvements, resource cost management strategies, and data management and analysis methods.  These individual steps, executed with a common purpose, are how climate change mitigation goes from a goal to a reality.

Whether implementing utility-scale energy management projects, pursuing green building initiatives, or finding ways to reduce landfill waste, Facilities Management has pledged to help Duke eliminate or offset all campus greenhouse gas emissions over time, and in the process, lead the transition to a sustainable built environment and economy.
