Two old trees replaced on West Campus (SLIDESHOW)

In December and January, staff members from Duke Facilities Management and Bartlett Tree Experts, a Raleigh-based tree-care company, removed and replaced two 80-year old oak trees from West Campus. Both trees were found to be missing at least half their buttress roots and suffered from heavy wood decay.

After the removal of the decayed trees, 20-feet tall trees were planted in the same locations. Duke University Photography documented the removal process of the Willow Oak in front of the Allen Building, and its replacement:
